"And verily this Ummah of yours is a single Ummah, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (Alone). "

It had all started in a small desolate cave on the outskirts of Mecca, over 1460 years ago, when a voice from beyond exorted the last prophet of God, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):
"READ in the name of thy Sustainer,
who has created man out of a germ-cell
Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One
who has taught [man] the use of the pen
taught man what he did not know!"
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 96, Verse 1 thru 5)

This was the first verse to be revealed to the holy prophet(pbuh). From that moment onwards, and within 150 years Islam was established as the faith of the most advanced civilization in the world. At a time when the rest of the world was immersed in the 'dark ages', the Islamic Empire rose as a beacon of knowledge, scientific achievement and critical thinking. They joined the ancient knowledge of the Greeks, Chinese and the Indian civilizations which was long forgotten and forged ahead with discoveries and inventions of their own. They provided the secure environment where scholar from different corners of the known world could gather and discuss ideas.

"ARE, THEN, they who are bent on denying the truth
not aware that the heavens and the earth were [once] one single entity
which We then parted asunder?
– and [that] We made out of water every living thing?
Will they not, then, [begin to] believe?"
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 21, Verse 30)

Blue Mosque - TurkeyTheir schools, or 'Madrasa' were centers of dispursing knowledge where application of quantification and mathematics to medicine were demonstrated, where seeds of modern chemistry based on organized study of chemical reactions were sowed, where great strides were made in Astronomy and the study of Galaxies. It was here where the first effective treatments for contagious diseases like small-pox and measles were discovered and the circulatory, nervous and structural systems within the human body were studied. It was here where great advancements were made in Phsycology, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, Botony etc.

"...and then We create out of the drop of sperm a germ-cell,
and then We create out of the germ-cell an embryonic lump,
and then We create within the embryonic lump bones,
and then We clothe the bones with flesh
- and then We bring [all] this into being as a new creation:
hallowed, therefore, is God, the best of artisans!"
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 23, Verse 14)

Map of Muslim Empire

It was in these lands that the first shinning examples of tolerance were set, providing refuge to the numerous Christians and Jews escaping the european pogroms and inquisitions. All these were set based on the faith in almighty God, and the guidance they received from the Holy Qur'an:

"O YOU who have attained to faith!
Be ever steadfast in upholding equity, bearing witness to the truth for the sake of God,
even though it be against your own selves or your parents and kinsfolk.
Whether the person concerned be rich or poor, God's claim takes precedence over [the claims of] either of them.
Do not, then, follow your own desires, lest you swerve from justice:
for if you distort [the truth], behold, God is indeed aware of all that you do! "
(Al Qur'an - Chapter 4, Verse 135)

Status of Women

The earliest part of this civilization saw strong women in the likes of Khadija(ra) first wife of the prophet, a rich business woman and the first muslim, 'Aisha(ra) beloved wife of the holy prophet and the daughter of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr(ra), who was a learned scholar and a primary source of guidance to all Muslims including the first three Caliphs. The list included numerous other scholars like Nafisa bint al-Hasan (taught Imam ash-Shafi'i), businesswomen like Khaula, Lakhmia, Thaqafia, and Bint Makhramah, surgeons and nurses like Rufaidah Aslamiyyah, Umm Muta', Umm Kabashah, Hamnah bint Jahsh, Mu'adhah, Laila, Umaimah, Umm Zaid, Umm 'Atiyyah, and Umm Sulaim, jurists ('Aisha bint Abu Bakr, Umm Salam, Safiyyah, Hafsa, Umm Habiba, Juwayriyyah, Maymuna, Fatima, Zahra, Umm Sharik, Umm 'Atya, Asma' bint Abu Bakr, Haila bint Qanif, Khaula bint Tuwait, Umm al-Darda, Atika bint Zaid, Sahalah bint Suhail, Fatima bint Qais, Zaynabah bint Abu Salamah, Umm Ayman, and Umm Yusuf) and even warriors (Umm Hakim, Asma' bint Yazid, Umm Salaim).

"VERILY, for all men and women who have surrendered themselves unto God,
and all believing men and believing women,
and all truly devout men and truly devout women,
and all men and women who are true to their word,
and all men and women who are patient in adversity,
and all men and women who humble themselves [before God],
and all men and women who give in charity,
and all self-denying men and self-denying women,
and all men and women who are mindful of their chastity,
and all men and women who remember God unceasingly:
for [all of] them has God readied forgiveness of sins and a mighty reward."
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 33, Verse 35)

Steep decline in recent years

Unfortunately, greed and deviating from the pursuit of faith and knowledge has led to the steep decline of this once proud community. We have learned to dwell on past laurels and have forgotten the stark warning the verses of the Holy Qur'an had given us:

But nay! I call to witness [Our being] the Sustainer of all the points of sunrise and sunset:
verily, well able are We to replace them with [people]better than they are;
for there is nothing to prevent Us [from doing what We will].
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 70, Verse 40 - 41)

And indeed as we got more absorbed in chasing after worldly titles, pleasuresand riches,we were replaced at the top byTurmoil in Muslim Areas a communitywho are more focussed, charitable and united than us. For the past century we have spent our time quarreling among ourselves, shedding innocent blood and pining after things that were never ours to being with. Our 'Madrasa' have turned from being centers of dispersing knowledge gained thru years of study and research, both of this world and the religious texts, into factories, producing automatons where children are just taught to memorize verses of the Qur'an without trying to understand; a place critical thinking and research are frowned upon and actively discouraged. Women are once again being treated as chattle, just as in the days of jahiliya! Injustice, intolerance and illiteracy are rampant in our lands and we have severely deviated from the path Islam had taught us:

O YOU who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in your devotion to God,
bearing witness to the truth in all equity;
and never let hatred of any-one lead you into the sin of deviating from justice.
Be just: this is closest to being God-conscious.
And remain conscious of God: verily, God is aware of all that you do.
(Al Qur'an, Chapter 5, Verse 8)

This site was created with an aim to provide a unified platform for all Muslims to interact, organize and help those, in our Umma, in need, either professionally, logistically, monetarily or even politically.

“……Verily, God does not change men's condition unless they change their inner selves;  and when God wills people to suffer evil [in consequence of their own evil deeds], there is none who could avert it: for they have none who could protect them from Him.”
[Al-Qur’an,  Chapter Ar-Ra’d, Verse 11]

The need of the hour for Muslims today is to create a unifying voice for our Ummah, right across the globe and bring cohesiveness and unity in our actions. This would involve getting all Islamic organizations on a common platform interacting and coordinanting with each other, setting up and trying to improve educational standards across our global community, helping create new college graduates and helping them get the required professional, career and personal guidance at least thru the initial phase of their career. This would also involve providing guidance to families and individual and helping them coming up with solutions to the daily problems, personally and professionally, as they try to practice Islam in a rapidly changing world. And of-course to fullfill the need to establish a 'micro' media network that would help spread critical information all around without having to go thru biased filters all over, and to organize a response to the mis-information war being wages against Islam.

Our aim here is not to promote one sect of Muslim over another, nor is it to give more credence to one race over another. This would be a strictly unbiased platform where Muslims from all 'recognised' sects recognized universally as being within Islam, will be able to come together to promote development of our Ummah in all aspects of life.

This would involve trying to unify our effort to try to create a presence in different aspects including business, academics, research, politics and sports. And this would also involve trying to establish the real meaning of Islam within own community and spread the true word about Islam among those interested in learning. Help unify the disparate efforts of different organizations, web-site and fora spread all over in order to optimize results.
And most imporatantly this will involve getting back the sense of pride we once had at the priviledge of being able to call oneself a member of the Islamic Ummah.

O you who have attained to faith! Be conscious of God with all the consciousness that is due to Him, and do not allow death to overtake you ere you have surrendered yourselves unto Him. And hold fast, all together, unto the bond with God, and do not draw apart from one another. And remember the blessings which God has bestowed upon you: how, when you were enemies, He brought your hearts together, so that through His blessing you became brethren; and [how, when] you were on the brink of a fiery abyss. He saved you from it. In this way God makes clear His messages unto you, so that you might find guidance, (Al- Qur'an, Chapter 3, Verse 102-103)

With the above set of aims we have set out to launch and establish two new sites:

Ummah Link has been floated as a platform where news from any corner in the world can reach us (via. internet) without having to pass through the filters of commercial media or local government censorship. This platform is being developed in a way where members can directly submit their news articles or video coverage of local events, and this can directly be published to our news portal real time. All that will be needed would be access to high speed internet.

The main aim of 'Ummah Link' would be to organize our members in a way to -

  • To promote a media platform where News can be captured and promoted real time, by our members, without any filters or agendas promoted by the current 'for profit' media agencies that dominate all other outlets.

  • Promote communication and interaction within our community in order to be able to pass information from one corner to another without being dependant on un-sympathatic government or corporate controlled media.

  • To derive and promote a system of 'micro-media' where information (in the form of write-ups, audio and video files) on local events and happenings can be posted and spread across the world.

  • To organize a systematic response to the negative stereotypes being promoted in the regular media outlets in the form of letters, calling into radio and television talk shows etc.
